Ladakh, for the first time

What to pack, when to go, and why the best thing you can bring is a little patience.

Ladakh, for the first time

Ladakh is a place that asks you to slow down. Its high altitude landscapes look spectacular but your first few days are best spent gently: a short walk, a cup of tea, and plenty of water. Give yourself time to acclimatise before heading over any passes.

The warmer months generally make road journeys easier, while winter brings a completely different kind of adventure. Conditions change quickly so always check the current forecast and local road conditions before you travel.

Pack layers rather than one heavy jacket, bring good sunglasses, sun protection, and comfortable walking shoes. Carry a reusable bottle and respect local guidance around water, waste, and photography at monasteries.

Leave space in the itinerary. A conversation in a village or an unexpected view along the road can easily become the most memorable part of the journey.
